Wedding Wednesday!!

To hyphenate or not to hyphenate....

To hyphenate or not to hyphenate....
Lately I have been thinking about weather or not I should hyphenate
my last name or change it all together. I always thought
I would just change my last name to my husbands when I got married.
I like the idea of being a traditional lady.
However now I realize that I will be 28 years old when I get married in June.
Which means I already have credit, medical records and job history in my current last name.

I feel very torn with this situation. I like my current last name.
If we were to ever have children I would not hyphenate their last name.
My last name and Ray's last name do blend well, neither of us have horrible last names.

What do you think about hyphenated last names?

***As a bonus here's a link to last name's that should never be hyphenated. ***

Ha. Those were funny.

I chose to keep my own name. I figured it served me well for 25 years, why change it? My ex didn't care and I suppose in retrospect it's a good think I didn't. There is nothing more annoying at work that trying to find the e-mail of someone you worked with and they no longer exist ... well, you don't know who they are because they got married. Grrrrr.

My daughter took her Dad's last name. I don't mind people who hyphenate, although then does your child hyphenate Smith-Jones-Davis and their child? Smith-Jones-Davis-Brown? Where does it end?

It's a personal thing, but I don't see the point in changing names, as long as people don't get all testy about it. My daughter's school often refers to me as Mrs. Herlastname and that's fine. I know who they mean, but some people really get bent out of shape about it which is weird.

Hehe that's ironic, I just watched Kim Kardashian's wedding last night and she was having the same issue (to change the name or not to change)...

I think ultimately it's a personal decision. I personally would change my last name, I feel like it's a traditional way of showing your man that you want to be his. I love the idea of my husband, myself and our kids all having the same family name. (Wouldn't it be odd making a reservation for the Smith family plus 1 Jones on the side lol?)

Call me old-fashioned but I do love the idea of changing your name. It's the start of a new chapter in life, in some cases a new home, so why not a new name :)

Good luck with whatever decision you make ! Go with your gut instinct ♥

I'm not a fan. If you feel a need to keep your name, then keep it. That is just my opinion and I think it is a personal decision. Some people take it very seriously and that is fine for them.

My ex took my name as she wanted a name people could pronounce and spell (she had an Italian last name with more consonants than necessary). I wouldn't have cared if she kept her name.

I have a friend who took her husband's last name, but changed her middle name to her original last name. She then used it professionally.

I took Harry' last name. My maiden name was always difficult for people to spell and pronounce, so that was a big factor in my decision. I was surprised at how easy it was to switch over. Plus, if we had had children, I wanted us all to have the same name.

I'm not a big fan of the hyphenate, but that's just my opinion. I have friends that kept their own name, changed it and hyphenated, and all are satisfied with what they chose. Do what makes you happy and keep in mind that nothing's set in stone - you can always change your mind. I do miss my maiden name sometimes. It's weird to have that erased.
